How the chat decides what to say

Site Mascot 2.1 and later Updated October 15, 2026

Click the mascot and a chat window opens. It remembers the conversation while the visitor browses (it is kept in their browser for the visit, and Start over clears it), shows suggestion buttons, and understands follow-ups such as “and for postgraduates?”.

The order it tries

  1. Small talk: greetings, thanks, goodbye and “who are you?”, in English and isiZulu.
  2. Your Q&A: if the question matches one you wrote (or one of its other wordings), the mascot gives your answer word for word, with your link as a button. Close wording matches too. If two entries match equally, such as tuition fees and application fees, it asks which one the visitor means.
  3. Contact questions: answered from the email and phone published on your site.
  4. Your pages: a keyword search over the scanned pages returns the best one to three links. With an Anthropic key and AI answers on, Claude writes a short reply (about 60 words at most) from the matching pages and your near-matching Q&A. If it is not sure, it says so.
  5. Can’t answer: it says so, shows your contact details and popular pages, offers “Did you mean…?” buttons and lets the visitor leave a message. The message is emailed to you (Settings → Send messages to, default the site admin email) and appears in Conversations.

After most answers the visitor can tap Yes or No on “Was this helpful?”. Those ratings appear in Analytics.
